Tattoos are entering the mainstream. According to a 2006 study, almost one in four Americans between the ages of 18 and 50 had a tattoo (AP: “Survey: 24% Between 18-50 Tattooed”). As a result, it is harder to find a tattoo design that will be unique to you – but because tattoos are a chance to express yourself, thinking outside the box with yours is a worthy pursuit. Here are some ideas for how to design a tattoo that will be as individual as you are.

Tattoos for girls

There are plenty of tattoo designs for girls and women. Color tattoos, and tattoos that are done in outlines instead of filled in with black, can be more feminine than other designs. Many of the common “girly” tattoos include butterflies, flowers, hearts, and stars. These images are definitely beautiful, but you probably want to avoid getting one that looks just like someone else’s.

In order to make your tattoo design unique, consider bringing a few images you like into your tattoo artist for inspiration, and then asking them if they would customize a design just for you. Do you have a favorite flower, a favorite color? Let them know! Tattoo artists are just that – artists – and a good one should be happy to draw a tattoo based on your ideas.
